MYOBRACE FOR CHILDREN

ALLOWS YOUR CHILD'S FACE, JAW & TEETH

DEVELOP TO THEIR FULL NATURAL POTENTIAL.

What causes orthodontic problems in children?

3 out of every 4 children have crowded teeth and incorrectly developing jaws. These problems are evident from as early as 4 years of age.

Research has now proven that the causes of incorrect jaw and face development, crowded teeth, and other orthodontic issues are bad oral habits:

  • mouth breathing

  • swallowing incorrectly

  • wrong tongue position

  • thumb/dummy sucking

Bad oral habits lead to insufficient jaw development resulting in incorrect face growth and the lack of space for all teeth to fit into their natural position. Quite often the healthy permanent teeth are then removed to make space but that results in an imbalanced face profile and in time the face ages faster than normally expected.

Early pre-orthodontic assessment is crucial.

Traditional Dentists, Orthodontists, and NHS practitioners do not recommend any treatment until all permanent teeth are present (about 13 years old). Unfortunately, this is often too late to provide optimal results as a child's jaw is growing between the ages of 6 and 10. The poor oral habits can be detected as early as 3 years of age, long before permanent teeth come through.

Assessment of young children is important as it allows for early diagnosis of the problems and much more effective treatment while the child is still growing.

Early treatment allows for an optimal face growth, healthier smile and prevents more serious problems later in life.

What is Myobrace?

Myobrace is an Early Orthodontic Treatment suitable for Children Aged 3 - 15.

It is a no-brace orthodontic system that works by eliminating causes of crooked teeth, aligning teeth into their natural position and minimising the need for braces in the future.

Key benefits of Myobrace:

The advantage of the Myobrace for Kids over traditional methods is that it’s not only aimed at straightening teeth, but also at correcting the poor oral habits that cause crooked teeth and underdeveloped jaws.

How does Myobrace work?

The treatment involves using a series of removable appliances designed to effectively train the tongue to stay in a correct position, retrain mouth and face muscles and apply light forces to straighten the teeth.

Myobrace needs to be worn for 1-2 hours a day and during the night while sleeping.

Myobrace treatment stages:

Treatment with Myobrace involves 4 stages: habit correction, arch development, dental alignment and retention. There is a special appliance for each stage.

Correcting bad oral habits in the first place is vital to the success of your child’s orthodontic treatment in the long term.

Unless eliminated, mouth breathing, incorrect swallowing and wrong tongue position will cause teeth to crowd up again.

Myobrace is for children aged 3-15

What is the best age for the treatment with Myobrace?

The system works best for children who are still growing, between ages of 6 to 10. However if poor oral habits are discovered at an earlier age, it is best to start treatment immediately, even at the age of 3. We strongly encourage the first visit at the first sign of any problem. Children as young as 3 years old should be seen if they are mouth-breathers.

Treatment Overview:

The Myobrace trainer must be worn daily for 1-2 hours and overnight while sleeping.

Along with wearing the trainer, children visit the surgery every month where they are evaluated and given a few easy exercises to perform at home. It’s important to assist the use of the trainer by doing these simple, yet effective tongue, mouth and breathing activities. The Myobrace for Kids works a bit like a training program, daily commitment and persistence are crucial to achieving the best results.

Children can visit a friendly website myobraceactivities.com which helps them stay motivated and practice fun activities they learnt during their visit to the dental practice. There's also an app for phones and desktops available.

In a small number of cases, fixed braces may be required for a short time to provide optimal alignment.

The treatment time with Myobrace for kids is usually similar to the time required for treatment with braces, but there are many advantages of Myobrace over traditional methods.

What to look out for in your child's mouth?

Tongue - the correct resting position of the tongue is on the roof of your mouth. That shapes the upper jaw development. If the tongue doesn't rest there, the upper jaw becomes narrow and there isn't sufficient space for the teeth to fit in.

Mouth breathing - if a child is breathing through their mouth, their tongue doesn't rest in the right position. This prevents the jaw and face from growing forward and results in narrow jaws and underdeveloped face.

Reverse swallowing - when the tongue pushes forward, and the lips pusback are what we call the reverse swallowing. The face muscles push backward causing teeth crowding and restricting the face from growing forward.

incorrect tongue position causes teeth crowding and insufficient jaw development

Lips and cheeks - the incorrect swallowing is when the lower lip is moving a lot. This will cause misalignment of the lower lip and will prevent the jaw from growing.
